ScoMo says ‘the quiet Australians’ gave Coalition victory

After attributing the Coalition’s stunning weekend win to “the quiet Australians”, PM Scott Morrison has laid out his first priorities as he gets back to work – and Queensland MPs say he needs to deliver for the men and women who voted him in.

Vegan activists could face jail: Morrison

TAX cuts, stopping foreign fighters returning unchecked and cracking down on violent vegan protesters will top Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s agenda, as he attributes his weekend win to “the quiet Australians”.

Discussions on the frontbench reshuffle will begin in earnest in the coming days as the final seats are locked in and declared.

The Coalition had secured 75 seats on Monday and was on track to get at least 77, enough to have a majority on the floor and the Speaker.

Mr Morrison was already back at work on Monday, and can expect to have Queensland MPs knocking on his door.

After the state delivered government to the Coalition, Queensland MPs say the government needs to deliver for the men and women in high-vis and steel-toe boots who voted for the LNP, many for the first time.

Mr Morrison met with his leadership team yesterday, before receiving briefings from intelligence and security agencies.

He will meet with Treasurer Josh Frydenberg today to discuss upcoming economic issues, with interest rates expected to be on the agenda.

Mr Morrison said it was a “humbling experience” to be returned, but now voters wanted him to get on with the job.

“They’ve had their say, they’ve made their decision. Now they expect us to get on with it so they can get on with their lives,” he said.

“That’s what the quiet Australians have said and I’m going to honour that.”

As well as getting the tax offsets of up to $1080 passed through Parliament before July 1, the Morrison Government has a range of measures to get through.

High on the list of priorities is passing laws to put in place “temporary exclusion orders”, which can ban Australian citizens who fought in Iraq and Syria from returning to the country for up to two years while terms and strict conditions are put in place.

They also plan to get laws to stop vegan activists publishing the address of farms and invading properties, with up to 12 months jail time for those who do.

The final make up of the Senate is still to be determined as the vote continues to be counted.

The Greens and One Nation are likely to get one spot each in Queensland, while the LNP will get at least two with a third a possibility.

Labor will get at least one, while they are fighting for a second.
