Cr Cooper did not respond to a request for comment. Under LNP rules candidates are forbidden from talking about their potential preselection.
Opposition Leader Deb Frecklington last month named Aspley as one of 11 target seats the party must win if it is to win government from Labor at the October 2020 poll.
Mr Mellish wrested the seat from the LNP at the 2017 election.
He beat then Newman government minister Tracy Davis, who is now a Brisbane city councillor herself after she replaced retired Cr Norm Wyndham earlier this year.
Labor holds the Aspley electorate with a margin of just over one percentage point.
It comes after Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk claimed underdog status during a keynote speech at Labor’s state conference at the weekend.
Ms Frecklington has also claimed underdog status.
