THE LNP have succumbed to public pressure to delete a controversial Christmas meme from their Facebook page.
Originally posted on Christmas Eve, the offending meme drew near-universal scorn from followers, who couldn’t help but roll their eyes.
The image, which featured a close-up of Prime Minister Scott Morrison, divided Australian political parties along the lines of who says “Merry Christmas” and those who say “Merry non-denominational seasonal festivity.”
The LNP positioned themselves in opposition to their rivals at the Australian Labor Party and the Greens.
The meme, presumably intended as a tongue-in-cheek joke at the expense of Australia’s left-leaning parties, missed its mark entirely — the major parties were unanimous in wishing supporters a Merry Christmas.
The post was deleted last night after a poor initial reception and re-uploaded, only to be taken down a second time around 9:30am this morning and replaced with a simpler ”Merry Christmas” message.
Commenters returned fire at the page’s social media managers’ moderation tactics of censoring unflattering comments.
“The party of “free speech” (but ONLY ours) and “freedom of religion” (but only OURS) at it again,” said Melissa Kate.
“Did you ask Santa for a decent social media strategy this Christmas?” asked Chris Cox.
“Merry “You’re all going to get wiped out at the next election” Christmas!!! Happy now?” said Daryl Sparkes.
“What a perfect way to celebrate Christmas — by breeding division and hate in the community, Jesus would have been proud,” Rachel Foster posted.
“Just because you want coal for Christmas doesn’t mean you have to try and get on the naughty list,” said would-be comedian Lorenzo Conanan.
Another commenter, Nikki West, said “Merry non-denominational seasonal festivities! Delete this if you want Bill Shorten to be PM.”
Her comment was removed several hours later.
