Larissa Waters set for Senate return, Andrew Bartlett makes Lower House bid

GREENS senator Andrew Bartlett has announced a political move that will pave the way for Larissa Waters to make a return.

FORMER Greens senator Larissa Waters is set to return to the job, with her replacement Andrew Bartlett announcing his resignation from the Senate.

Senator Bartlett entered the Senate last year after Ms Waters resigned, revealing herself as the second Greens member ineligible to sit in Parliament due to her dual citizenship.

Senator Bartlett confirmed this morning he would be quitting Parliament in late August to focus on campaigning for the seat of Brisbane in the House of Representatives.

The move paves the way for Ms Water to re-enter the Senate at the next election.

“I am thrilled to be returning to the Senate to continue to work for Queenslanders, who deserve a system that works for them, not just big corporates,” Ms Waters said.

“Andrew Bartlett has done a magnificent job in the Senate, and Brisbanites are lucky to have this ethical, warm man as their future representative.

“I’ll be working hard to help my friend win the seat of Brisbane, and together we will work to clean up politics and put people back at the heart of decision making again.”

Senator Bartlett said the “strong swings and successes” the Greens achieved at the last state election suggest the party had a strong chance of securing a Lower House seat at the next federal election.

“My time back in the Senate has given me the opportunity to speak with people around our state and one thing is clear to me — Queenslanders are sick of the stranglehold corporations and political donors have over our politics,” he said.

This was not the first time Senator Bartlett has served in Parliament.

He replaced Cheryl Kernot for the Democrats when she moved to the House of Representatives in 1997, before being re-elected to the Senate at the 2001 election.
