LABOR Senate hopeful Nita Green is set to be confirmed as the party’s number one candidate at this weekend’s Labor conference after winning the Left’s ballot.

Ms Green won 73 per cent of the combined branch and union vote to secure a win over her main rival Tania Major.

That included about 88 per cent of the union vote and just over 54 per cent of the branch vote.

It follows an acrimonious campaign within the Left to replace retiring Senator Claire Moore.

Ms Green has pledged to move to North Queensland following her election to ensure there is no loss in representation for the region.

Her nomination had sparked infighting among the Left, however, with some North Queensland branch delegates threatening to form a breakaway faction and caucus separately as a result.

The number 2 spot is expected to go to the Right’s Chris Ketter.

The Old Guard is understood to have endorsed Frank Gilbert as its candidate for the third spot.

Conference will confirm the order this weekend after a directive from the party’s national executive to hasten preselections in preparation for the looming Federal Election.
