MILLIONS of dollars will be splashed upgrading local suburban shopping villages in an election campaign pledge from Adrian Schrinner to revive the struggling precincts.

The Lord Mayor has committed to investing $32 million over the next four years to transform several precincts across the city as part of the council’s Village Precincts Projects program.

The first ten upgraded precincts will include Waterworks Rd at Ashgrove, Martha St at Camp Hill, Lumley St at Upper Mount Gravatt, Park Road at Milton and the Manly Harbour Village at Manly.

Another $6 million will be spent on decorative lighting in Bulimba, Nundah and East Brisbane in an effort to lure more shoppers and increase foot traffic around shopping villages.

“This is all about backing small business (and) helping to revitalise those suburban areas that have been doing it tough lately,” Cr Schrinner said.

“Lighting up these precincts really brings people out and has the support of local communities as well.

“We’ve seen them go into decline in the past. But when you invest in them … you really see it come to life.”

The upgrades can include new footpaths, new seating, better gardens as well as artwork installations.

Cr Schrinner said some of the shopping precincts that would be targeted by a re-elected LNP administration had been struggling in recent times.

“Some of the shopping precincts, they might’ve been built in the 50s and 60s and there hasn’t been a lot of change in that time,” he said.

“These things work best if both council and businesses invest. That’s what we’re seeing happen.”

Each upgrade can cost anywhere between $1 million up to several millions of dollars.
