Confectionary shops and supermarkets across Queensland are getting inundated with Fantales orders and phone calls as people scramble to stock up on the treat after it was confirmed it would be discontinued.
Tom’s Confectionery manager Sam Major said since the announcement the Hendra store was getting hundreds of calls each day asking for stock.
While Great Aussie Sweet Company at South Bank sold more than 30kg since the announcement.
Supermarkets have also been getting slammed with Chris’ IGA Carina selling ten boxes (with 12 packets in each) in a span of four days, compared to the usual one a week they would normally sell.
Great Aussie Sweet Company owner Donna Smith said she was getting a lot of instore inquiries and online sales.
“We had to take it offline because we are running low. We ordered as much as we could,” she said.
“We got 36kg of them on Thursday, we are down to a couple of kilos left in store.
“I think by Friday we had probably 10kg sold on our website all over Australia.”
Ms Smith said customers had been devastated by the announcement. The store has plenty of stock on back-order and are hoping to get another 40kg soon.
Chris’ IGA manager Bill Vasiliou said it disappeared from his shop very quickly.
“I have three or four packets on the shelves at the moment,” he said.
“Some are buying two or three packets. Some are buying five or six.”
Mr Vasiliou said he was told by suppliers they should be stocked up again soon.
He said customers were even coming in to buy the lollies to then send overseas to places like London.
“A customer was sending his son living in London a package and they had to include Fantales,” he said.
Mr Major sales of the product were usually really slow.
“Without notice we heard news, we had people tag us about it,” he said.
“Within the space of a few hours, all the stock we had was committed, Even our suppliers’ stock was committed. We’ve been scrounging to get what we can.”
Mr Major said a huge number of customers had signed up to their website to be notified about when stock was coming.
“On top of the number of sign ups – we’ve had hundreds of calls each days asking if we’ve got any stock,” he said.
“We are hoping to get some in the next week.
“We’ve put a large order in but how we will see how much of that we will get.
Coles is also finding many stores with low stock.
“We were sad to hear the news that the iconic Fantales are to be discontinued” a Coles spokeswoman said.
“While some stores are currently low, we’ll continue to stock Fantales on our shelves until production finishes.
“Of course we continue to stock a wide range of chocolates available to suit all tastes!
