With excavation at the Queen’s Wharf site almost complete, Brisbane’s skyline is set to be transformed in the coming months.

BRISBANE’S inner-city skyline will be dotted with cranes in coming months as work on the multi-billion dollar Queen’s Wharf project ramps up.

A giant tower crane has been installed on the $3.6 billion site this weekend as work shifts from excavation to construction on what will be Queensland’s largest basement and underground carpark.

It’s the first of 10 new tower cranes that will dominate the CBD’s skyline over the next six months.

The heavy lift crane between Queen’s Wharf Road and William Street will be used to build

one of the two towers for the Star Grand Hotel.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said during the past two-and-a-half years, there had been demolition and giant excavation but now work was going upwards.

“Having the first of the big cranes installed on-site is another exciting milestone,” she said.

“At peak construction there will be as many as 2000 workers on site and once completed

Queen’s Wharf will create up to 10,000 more jobs.”

The giant hole in the ground is 26 metres at its deepest.

When excavation finishes at the end of July, almost 400,000m3 of material would have been transported to the Brisbane Airport for reclamation work and to build the Automall.

Tourism Minister Kate Jones said the project would transform Queensland’s tourism offerings and an under-utilised part of the CBD.

“The Queen’s Wharf Brisbane precinct will have four new luxury hotels, more than 50 new

bars and restaurants, 2000 residential apartments and the size equivalent of 12 football

fields of public space when the development is complete,” she said.

A second tower crane will go up closer to Margaret St next weekend.

The main project will be completed by late-2022 with the refurbished heritage buildings to wrap up in late-2024.
