YouGov poll: Annastacia Palaszczuk’s satisfaction rating in negative for first time since pre-Covid

Annastacia Palaszczuk’s popularity has taken a serious hit, with Queenslanders now less satisfied with the Premier than they were with Campbell Newman or Anna Bligh before their election losses.

Annastacia Palaszczuk’s media tricks ‘not working for her’

Queenslanders are now less satisfied with Annastacia Palaszczuk’s performance than they were with her deeply unpopular predecessor Campbell Newman’s on the eve of his disastrous 2015 election loss.

An exclusive YouGov poll for The Courier-Mail has found the Premier’s net satisfaction rating is now in the negative for the first time since before the pandemic – with just 40 per cent of Queenslanders happy with the way she is doing the job, compared to 41 per cent who say they are dissatisfied.

Queenslanders are less satisfied with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk’s performance than they were with Campbell Newman (left) or Anna Bligh (right) before their election losses.

That is a far cry from her 57 per cent satisfaction rating during the 2020 state election campaign, when just 27 per cent were not happy with her performance.

Former LNP premier Newman’s satisfaction rating was 41 per cent during the 2015 campaign but his net result was -11, with 52 per cent dissatisfied.

Then Labor premier Anna Bligh’s satisfaction rating sat at 43 per cent before the 2012 election wipe-out, with a net result of -9.

Today’s result will put serious pressure on Ms Palaszczuk’s position within Labor, as it points to a worrying downward trend in her popularity.

Fifty per cent of respondents to the YouGov poll in February said they were satisfied with her, followed by 45 per cent in June, and 40 per cent last week – when this poll was taken.

Opposition Leader David Crisafulli’s satisfaction rating has remained at 31 per cent since June, with a 4 percentage point uplift to 27 per cent in those saying they are dissatisfied with him – suggesting he also has some work to do to win over the voting public before Queenslanders head to the polls on October 26 2024.

But there is an opportunity for him, with four in 10 Queenslanders still not having an opinion about how Mr Crisafulli is performing. That compares to just two in 10 when it comes to the Premier.

When asked who would be the better premier, 39 per cent said Ms Palaszczuk and 28 per cent said Mr Crisafulli – with one in three voters still uncommitted on that question.

But the Premier’s +11 result is the worst for her since former LNP leader Deb Frecklington got within striking distance in the second half of 2019, and it is the equal second closest result since Ms Palaszczuk won office in 2015.
