What you said: Steven Mile’s 50c transport slammed as desperate and shameful

Premier Steven Miles announced 50c public transport – no matter how far you travel – to much fanfare, but Queenslanders have slammed the move as desperate and shameful. WHAT YOU SAID.

Qld government abandons budget surplus for pre-election spending blitz

Train, bus, light rail and ferry fares will be slashed to a flat fee of 50c across the state, but the move left Queenslanders outraged, happy … and confused.

On Sunday, Queensland Premier Steven Miles revealed a 50c fare would apply for all TransLink services across the state irrespective of the location or distance from August 5.

Mr Miles said the measure would help “bust congestion” by making public transport “as close to free as you can get”.

Here’s what you said:

It’s about time:

Deirdre:

“It’s about time public transport became cheaper particularly during this cost of living crisis.”

Gunjan:

“Someone has to pay for it, thanks taxpayers.”

Harold:

“Winner idea …. Come on LNP get off your hands and make some policy or freeze in the opposition wilderness.”

Ann:

“The only positive from this ridiculous bribe is the homeless will now have a cheap warm place to lay their heads during the winter months. As long as they pay their 50 cents per trip, they can travel the buses, trains and ferries all day and all night (or at least until the last service).

A political bribe?

David:

“Absolute shameful STUNT by a desperate premier.”

Peter

“Wait till the election gets closer, Steve will be handing out overseas trips for 50 cents.”

Marita:

“Vote winning splash of cash for this initiative for 6 months shows their desperation to retain office.”

Allan:

“Vote buying by a desperate government.”

Michael:

“Isn’t trying to buy your way to power illegal?”

Desperate & Voteless:

James:

“Years ago there was a program named Desperate & Dateless. This latest BS is akin to Desperate & Voteless. Labor on their knees and willing to try anything to remain in power. Hold onto your hat, this is just the beginning!”

Ray

August 5th so you lot don’t forget or lose that warm and fuzzy feeling before the election in October. Yet the Premier stands there and feels no shame as he pretty much tells you that you have been bought cheaply before and you are likely to do so again.

AH:

“So why wait for August? My guess is the state can’t afford it for more than the lead up to the election.”
