Senator Gerard Rennick has launched legal action against the Liberal National Party after losing preselection last year.

The Australian reports the first-term Queensland senator filed a Supreme Court lawsuit naming members of the LNP state executive, after he unsuccessfully appealed the outcome of the ballot due to alleged “voter irregularities”.

Senator Rennick was edged out in last July’s preselection by party treasurer Stuart Fraser 131-128.

The Australian reported that Senator Rennick, an accountant, was seen as a right-wing renegade who withdrew his vote for the Coalition government in 2021 in protest against Covid-19 vaccine mandates.

In contrast, the moderate Mr Fraser was president of Tattersall’s in Brisbane and championed the vote allowing women to join the once men-only club.

An LNP spokesman said it would be inappropriate for the party to comment on a matter before the court.
