Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has travelled to Europe as partner Reza Adib speaks at an international medical conference.
Dr Adib is twice listed as a panel speaker and team member at the World Congress of the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders in Naples, Italy.
Ms Palaszczuk’s office on Saturday revealed the Premier would be on leave overseas until September 11 after questions were put by The Courier-Mail.
Her office has not detailed where Ms Palaszczuk is travelling.
On August 31 Dr Adib will speak as part of a panel on barriers within the National Health Service and Private Insurance.
Ms Palaszczuk is thought to be with Dr Adib in Italy. Her office has been contacted for comment.
Meanwhile, acting Premier Steven Miles has brushed aside criticism of Ms Palaszczuk jetting off during a youth crime crisis, after comparisons were made by media with former prime minister Scott Morrison’s infamous Hawaii trip during the Black Summer bushfires.
“The premier works hard – she’s entitled to take leave,” Mr Miles said.
“This was an overseas trip so clearly it couldn’t be organised quickly or indeed cancelled quickly.
“As someone who has in the past, you’ll recall, been criticised for where they’ve taken holidays, had their privacy invaded when they’ve taken holidays, I don’t have much sympathy for media criticism of politicians simply wanting to spend time with their families, recharge, so they can get back to work.”
When the Acting Premier was pressed about the intense scrutiny unleashed on Mr Morrison from Labor figures when he was photographed on a beach in Hawaii, Mr Miles said: “I don’t recall making comments about that myself.”
“This was probably the last chance in the electoral cycle for the premier to take a break,” the Acting Premier said, predicting a “gruelling” 14 months into the 2024 election.
“She planned the holiday, she took the holiday – I think it’s testament to the team that we have that we have people who can step up and make sure that we continue to serve Queenslanders.”
