A major report that could pave the way for the Crime and Corruption Commission to release details of its investigation into former deputy premier Jackie Trad has been handed to Premier Steven Miles.
The state government was on Monday given a report by Queensland’s former chief justice Catherine Holmes following her three-month review into the CCC’s ability to publish reports about its investigations.
Key to Ms Holmes’s report will be her view on whether legislative changes to the CCC’s reporting powers should be made retrospective.
Such a move would likely pave the way for the report into Ms Trad to be released.
Mr Miles on Monday said Ms Holmes’s report would be released after it was considered by the government.
“We’ll need time for cabinet to consider that report, but I don’t think it should take too long,” he said.
“It will be our intention to adopt her recommendations, but I haven’t seen them yet and so we’ll need to consider them.”
The High Court last year found the CCC could not table its reports in the Queensland parliament in relation to its investigations of Ms Trad and former public trustee Peter Carne – who are not accused of wrongdoing.
Ms Holmes led the three-month review amid a concession from Mr Miles about the need to legislate new reporting powers for the CCC.
The issue of whether any legislative amendments should be made to operate retrospectively – allowing reports into Ms Trad and Mr Carne to be published – will be key.
