Question Time Live: Palaszczuk government grilled over social housing in parliament

Annastacia Palaszczuk has fired up after her government was grilled over its social housing record by the Opposition and the Greens during Question Time. 

The Palaszczuk government has been grilled over social housing in parliament following revelations a Brisbane-based social and affordable housing provider had decided to sell an inner-city apartment block.

Housing Minister Leeanne Enoch has slammed the Brisbane Housing Company's (BHC) decision to sell the 27 apartments in Kelvin Grove, while former Labor housing minister Robert Schwarten has called for a parliamentary inquiry into the company.

A senior Labor party source on Wednesday said the decision had "caused a lot of consternation in the party among party members who've seen Labor traditionally being the champion of public housing."

But BHC, which is partly owned by the government and Brisbane City Council, said proceeds of the sale will be used to build 110 new units in the city that would be ready by March next year.

“Additionally, the sale will leverage a further 78 units in Yeronga planned for completion in 2024,” BHC chief executive Rebecca Oelkers said.

Ms Enoch was forced to answer questions about the government's social housing policies in Parliament.

Shadow Treasurer David Janetzki said the government had sold 295 homes and 67 parcels of land in the past 18 months, and questioned how the Minister could criticise a community housing provider for doing the same thing.
