A HIGH profile Queensland senator has thrown her support behind an LNP preselection candidate for Bowman, in a glowing endorsement tipping them as future Minister material.
Senator Amanda Stoker has written a letter of support for Property Council director of media and communications Henry Pike, describing him as a “rare find” and the “real deal”.
Several candidates have been confirmed for the preselection contest in Bowman, which will be vacated by LNP MP Andrew Laming at the next election.
Candidates include Redland Mayor Karen Williams, Fran Ward, and barrister Maggie Forrest, who in campaign material described herself as a Christian and said the “the creeping threat of Chinese aggressions” had touched the electorate.
Senator Stoker considers Mr Pike and his wife among her closest friends.
In her letter of support she described him as a “rare find” that needed to be attracted into politics.
“Henry doesn’t wilt when the kitchen gets hot. Even under pressure, he acts with good judgment, clarity and confidence,” she wrote.
“He’s got the contacts needed to climb the challenge of fundraising for a tough campaign and the intellect to, in time, make a serious ministerial contribution
“As you can tell, I think Henry is the real deal. If you were to entrust him with your endorsement, he would serve the Redlands district well.”
It is understood Mr Pike’s list of endorsements include a former Australian prime minister.
The Courier-Mail has previously reported that Ms Forrest’s backers include Social Services Minister Anne Ruston and state opposition finance spokesman Jarrod Bleijie.
Other preselection candidates running include Property Council director of media and communications Henry Pike and Fran Ward.
Mr Laming announced he would not contest the next election after a series of allegations, which he apologised for but maintained he had done nothing wrong.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has previously been said to be backing a “strong female candidate” to run in the seat.
The preselection contest will take place on July 3.
