Anthony Albanese has tapped Queensland’s former top bureaucrat and Labor state secretary Mike Kaiser to lead his Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.
Mr Kaiser, who was controversially elevated by Steven Miles in December 2023 to become Queensland Department of Premier and Cabinet Director-General, was praised by the Prime Minister for his public service record.
“Mr Kaiser’s experience includes delivering on large-scale projects, administering complex regulatory regimes and leading the Queensland Government’s policies on planning and infrastructure,” Mr Albanese said.
The five-year term will start on Monday, subject to the Governor-General’s approval.
Mr Miles appointed Mr Kaiser as Queensland’s top public servant after becoming premier in December 2023 – a decision the LNP labelled a “sick joke”.
It capped a stunning resurrection for Mr Kaiser, who was forced to resign from Queensland Parliament in 2001 over a vote-rigging scandal.
Mr Kaiser later reflected on the “really stupid” 1986 incident when his signature on false enrolment form would force his resignation as member for Woodridge 15 years later.
He said it saved him from a “bloody boring career” as a Labor minister, and allowed him to succeed in the private sector, advise premiers and work as director-general of several government departments.
Mr Kaiser was one of the first bureaucrats punted by the incoming LNP government after the October 26 state election.
He has since worked as a freelance consultant.
