Premier Steven Miles has vowed to provide Queensland MP Brittany Lauga with “whatever she needs” amid bombshell allegations she was drugged and sexually assaulted on a night out.

Mr Miles, in a statement, said his “sole focus” was on Ms Lauga and her wellbeing.

“No one should have to go through what Brittany is going through,” he said.

“My sole focus is on Brittany and her wellbeing. I’ve told Brittany that we’re here to support her, whatever she needs.

“This matter is currently subject to a police investigation.

“Out of respect of her privacy, and in the interests of allowing the police to complete their investigation, it is not appropriate for me to comment any further.”

Ms Lauga, the Yeppoon-based member for Keppel and an assistant minister, also alleged that other women may have been drugged on the night.

Ms Lauga, in a post on social media, confirmed a police investigation was underway.

The nation’s latest reckoning around male perpetrated violence also prompted Ms Lauga to slam the inability for women to have a night out on the town without the risk of being drugged or sexually assaulted.

“In the early hours of Sunday morning I went to the Yeppoon Police Station and Yeppoon Hospital, after being drugged and sexually assaulted,” she said.

“Tests at the hospital confirmed the presence of drugs in my body which I did not take. This substance impacted me significantly.

“A police investigation is underway. I have been contacted by other women who may also have been drugged in Yeppoon on Saturday night.”

Ms Lauga said this could have “happened to anyone and does happen to many of us”.

“I have had multiple women contact me who have experienced the same thing in our town. It’s not OK,” she said.

“We should be able to enjoy socialising in our town without the risk of being drugged or assaulted.

“I need time to physically and emotionally heal after what has happened so I ask you respect my privacy as I get the support I need.”

Ms Lauga thanked those had reached out for support and asked those who had information on what occurred to inform police.

Ms Lauga, said it was sickening to learn of the alleged assault.

“Those are shocking allegations and I’ve read Brittany’s statement and it is really difficult reading,” Ms Scanlon said.

“Brittany is a colleague, she is a friend and a young woman in the Queensland parliament and these are really shocking things to read.

“I understand Brittany is going to take a short time to look after herself and we absolutely support her to do that.

“It would be inappropriate for me to comment any further (on this incident but) with some of the broader conversations that have happened across the country this week, it is unacceptable that women are disproportionately victims of domestic, family and sexual violence.

“We need good men, and there are many of them, to stand up and speak out, because women are tired.”

Ms Scanlon also said it was upsetting to hear of video footage circulating online.

“Any allegations of revenge porn or distribution of material without someone’s consent is of course horrifying to hear.”
