Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk posts picture of NSW beach to promote Gold Coast tourism campaign

In an embarrassing stuff up for both Annastacia Palaszczuk and her 30-strong team of political spinners, the Premier’s Instagram account posted a picture of a NSW beach while promoting tourism vouchers on the Gold Coast.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has found herself in an embarrassing debacle after a post on her social media page promoting a Gold Coast tourism campaign unknowingly used an image of an iconic New South Wales beach.

The graphic which was posted in “error” seemed to slip through the cracks of the extensive 30-person media team who are in charge of curating her public image.

The post was promoting the Play Money Reward campaign which hands out vouchers to Gold Coast residents to go towards supporting local tourism.

However, rather than using an image of one of the many beaches on the Gold Coast, or even Queensland, the media team chose an snapshot of Duranbah Beach, which is located south of the border in Tweed Heads.

The post was removed from all of the Premier’s social media accounts after the Courier Mail raised questions about the blunder.

A government spokesman said the image was “posted in error” and had since been removed.

It comes after Ms Palaszczuk came under fire earlier this year when The Courier-Mail revealed she had a team of up to 30 media spinners reporting to her.

This included 18 full-time media staff, and it was understood there were a further 11.5 full-time equivalents who existed in a separate digital team.

Manager of Opposition Business, Jarrod Bleijie, slammed the Premier saying the office deleted the post out of “sheer embarrassment”.

“Labor’s had a shocking week on the tweets,” he said.

“The Premier’s 30 media spin doctors can’t even find a picture of a Gold Coast beach for a Gold Coast incentive and then out of sheer embarrassment they delete it.”

Meanwhile, Currumbin MP Laura Gerber said that “all locals” know the beach as Duranbah, which is commonly known as D-Bar.

“If the Premier actually bothered to engage with border communities, she’d realise this is a New South Wales beach.”

The promotion was part of the $1m dollars’ worth of vouchers handed out to support border zone businesses and tourism operators.

In the scheme, Gold Coast residents get back $50 when they spend $100 with one of the nearly 150 local participating businesses, or $100 back when they spend $200 or more on accommodation.
