Neville Bonner Bridge milestone ‘supercharges Brisbane skyline’

The highly-anticipated $3.6bn Queen’s Wharf project has hit a major milestone, with a key bit of infrastructure manoeuvred into place.

The $3.6b Queen’s Wharf has celebrated a significant milestone with the soaring mast on the under-construction Neville Bonner Bridge lifted into place this week.

The striking structure now sits about 78m above the Brisbane river’s edge, meaning it is now about the same height as the Story Bridge.

The milestone comes just a day after the first section of the Queen’s Wharf Sky Deck was lifted into place.

The Sky Deck – 100m above ground level – connects all four towers in the resort development, with two more levels to hold bars and restaurants to be constructed.

Destination Brisbane Consortium project director Simon Crooks said the new bridge would be an ongoing asset for the city, and would “supercharge Brisbane’s skyline”.

“The bridge in essence creates a pedestrian only highway between Brisbane’s cultural precinct, the rail and bus network hubs at South Brisbane, and Queen’s Wharf including the southern end of the CBD,” he said.

“Furthermore, the Neville Bonner Bridge creates a majestic pedestrian river loop that takes in

the amazing city views from the South Bank Promenade and the Mangrove Walk that

showcases local Indigenous totems and storytelling.”

The bridge will connect with the new development in the first half of next year, and open to the public along with the resort in the second half of 2023.

The project milestones come after a tough week for the development’s major partner Star Entertainment, with the company this week deemed “unsuitable” to hold a casino license in New South Wales following a bombshell review.

Interim chair Ben Heap issued a statement on Thursday offering a “sincere and unreserved apology”, with the company pledging to address the serious concerns raised.

“It is clear from the Report that we need to fundamentally transform our culture,” he said.

“We need more transparency, more robust governance, and greater accountability.
