Motorists busted speeding on Queensland roads have been hit with more than one million fines in the past year – with about $687,000 worth of penalties given out every day.

The Courier-Mail can reveal that during 2021, there were 1.002 million infringement notices issued to speeding drivers – up 8.6 per cent from the 922,837 that were dished out in 2020.

The total value of the fines issued in 2021 reached a massive $251m – which means about $477 worth of fines were given out every minute of every day.

The majority of the drivers caught speeding last year were travelling up to 13km/h over the speed limit – but there were still thousands of reckless motorists nabbed speeding in the higher ranges.

This included 3,592 fines that were given out to motorists clocked driving at more than 40km/h over the speed limit, as well as 8,591 fines for those travelling between 31 and 40km/h over.

There were also 43,500 fines given to drivers caught speeding between 21 and 30km/h over the limit.

The revelation comes after Transport Minister Mark Bailey last week announced the government would be jacking up the value of speeding fines under a 10-year strategy to halve the road toll by 2031.

The fine for travelling between 1 and 10km/h over the limit will increase from $183 to $287, while those nabbed speeding between 11 and 20km/h over will be stung $431 instead of $275.

“Following a tragic start to the year, we are reaffirming our commitment to zero road deaths and serious injuries by cracking down on reckless behaviour,” Mr Bailey said.

“We’ve seen a dramatic spike in the number of lives lost on Queensland roads over the past two years, with over 270 people missing from dinner tables around the state in both 2020 and 2021.

“This is well above average and follows the lowest number of lives lost on the roads ever on record in 2019.”

The $251.03m in fines given out last year was up 9 per cent – or roughly $20.7m – from the $230.27m in infringements issued in 2021.
