Queensland motorists caught speeding, using their phone behind the wheel or not wearing a seatbelt will be hit with hefty new penalties from July 1, as the government hikes the prices of fines.

Treasurer David Janetzki confirmed in March that the value of a penalty unit would rise by 3.5 per cent in 2025/26.

The value of a penalty unit from July 1 will rise from $161.30 to $166.90, with the biggest impacts to be felt by those who commit the most expensive offences.

Motorists caught not wearing a seatbelt, or using their phone behind the wheel will be slapped with heftier fines, increasing by $42 to about $1250.

Queensland drivers caught speeding more than 30 km/h but not more than 40 km/h will also be hit with a $1252 fine.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the average weekly wage in Queensland is $1923, meaning those rules could set a person back 65 per cent of their pay for the week.

Motorists caught carrying another person on a personal mobility device can expect to be hit with a $166 fine, up from $161, and those who fail to stop at a red light can expect to be stung $665.

And Queensland drivers caught speeding by more than 40 km/h can expect to be fined $1918, up from $1852.

Fines and forfeitures was expected to raise $912 million in revenue for the state government in 2025/26, according to estimates in the latest budget.

The former Labor government approved a 4.2 per cent fine hike this financial year, which was tipped to make $794 million in revenue for the state government.
