Landmark voluntary assisted dying laws are on the brink of being passed in Queensland despite a significant number of MPs remaining undecided about whether to support the significant legislation.

The Sunday-Mail has confirmed at least 43 Queensland MPs will use a conscience vote to support voluntary assisted dying – which will require 47 votes to pass – when it is debated in parliament this week.

Assisted dying advocates are confident enough undecided MPs will support the proposal and Speaker Curtis Pitt revealed he would cast the decisive vote in favour if required.

Notably, Opposition Leader David Crisafulli still refusing to say how he’ll vote on the Bill in an attempt to avoid influencing his LNP colleagues.

“I will cast my personal vote in parliament with the knowledge I have given this legislation the due consideration and respect it deserves,” he said.

“I have promised my team a conscience vote, which means a genuine free-vote, free of political influence.”

Gold Coast LNP MPs, Rob Molhoek, Sam O’Connor and Michael Hart are the only three Opposition members to confirm they will support the legislation as it stands.

Mr Molhoek has reservations about elements of the Bill but said people “deserve to die with dignity, free from pain and with choice.

“I would support the current Bill in a vote in the House, however would need to see the detail of any amendments made before casting a final vote,” he said.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has previously flagged the possibility of cabinet introducing last-minute amendments to the Bill following concerns from faith-based organisations.

Ms Palaszczuk, Deputy Premier Steven Miles, Attorney-General Shannon Fentiman and Health Minister Yvette D’Ath will vote in favour of the Bill.

“For the sake of Queenslanders who die in pain and would like to have a choice over the timing of their death I hope these laws pass,” Mr Miles said.

Several Opposition MPs have declared they are likely to support voluntary assisted dying but will wait for the final incarnation of the Bill before deciding how to vote.

It is understood any amendment would likely include increased powers for faith-based organisations to object to assisted dying occurring in their health facilities.

However, assisted dying advocate David Muir, chair of the Clem Jones Trust, said it would be “incredibly distressing” if people were forced to leave a faith-based hospital or healthcare provider to access end-of-life options.

“Don’t tip the balance away from the terminally ill, the terminally ill are the most important people in the room on this issue,” he said.

Surfers Paradise MP and former Opposition leader John-Paul Langbroek will miss the debate after being stuck in quarantine following the Premier’s snap entry ban on August 25.
