Federal Housing Minister Julie Collins will attend the Qld housing summit

The woman tasked with fixing the nation’s housing crisis will attend the landmark summit in Queensland next week to ensure the best ideas get straight back to Canberra.

A federal government frontbencher will attend Queensland’s landmark housing summit next week, ensuring any new ideas and reforms will be taken back to Canberra for consideration.

Federal Housing Minister Julie Collins confirmed she would travel to Queensland for the summit.

The landmark summit to be held on October 20, sparked by The Courier-Mail’s Hitting Home series, comes at a time when almost 46,000 Queenslanders are on a wait list for public housing.

Ms Collins said the summit was an “important opportunity” to ensure the federal government’s housing reform agenda aligned with initiatives being undertaken in Queensland alongside any “fresh ideas” that come out.

She said federal Labor was “determined” to work together with all levels of governments to “seriously address the challenges in Queensland and across the country”.

“This discussion will build on the two meetings of State and Territory Housing Ministers I have already convened – the first such meetings in almost five years – and the extensive consultation that was undertaken before the recent Jobs and Skills Summit,” Ms Collins said.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said Ms Collins’ attendance was a sign of a “genuine commitment” by both levels of government to address the housing crisis.

Ms Palaszczuk, speaking in parliament on Thursday, said the housing pressures hitting Australia were “unprecedented” and “complex” and required complex solutions.
