The state government’s patriotic “team Queensland” convoy to Canberra has failed to leave the state – with plane issues preventing the delegation from taking off to advocate against federal government infrastructure cuts.
The Courier-Mail can reveal eight mayors and stakeholders were left on the tarmac at Brisbane Airport on Wednesday morning due to mechanical issues.
It left Deputy Premier and Infrastructure Minister Steven Miles with a diminished army to lobby his federal counterpart Catherine King against funding cuts to Queensland.
Mr Miles was also spotted attending the National Press Club address of Jessica Rudd, The Parenthood CEO and daughter of Labor prime minister turned ambassador to the US Kevin Rudd.
The state government had promoted the “team Queensland” delegation’s travels to Canberra, with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk warning Ms King she would feel the wrath of the state.
Local Government Association of Queensland chief executive Alison Smith, Council of Mayors CEO Scott Smith and mayors of Ipswich, Redlands and Lockhart River Aboriginal Shire councils were on-board the Qantas flight which failed to lift off.
They were offered alternative flights later today or a refund and the delegation chose not to travel.
It is understood the stranded delegation joined Mr Miles’ meeting with Ms King via Microsoft Teams.
