Cross River Rail ‘lack of progress’ blasted by CFMEU

A stunning stoush has erupted between the powerful construction union and the State Labor Government over Cross River Rail.

Major delays, cost blowouts and mounting safety concerns are turning Cross River Rail into a slow-motion train wreck, according to Queensland’s powerful CFMEU.

A stunning stoush has erupted between the union and the State Labor Government, which it has accused of spreading “spin and bullsh*t” about the $5.4 billion public transport infrastructure project.

Transport Minister Mark Bailey insists the project is on schedule to open in 2025, however, union officials say disputes with subcontractors, issues removing soil and unpredictable ground quality are plaguing the development.

CFMEU state secretary Michael Ravbar claimed work at the Boggo Rd end of the project was 12 months behind schedule and said delays were even worse at the new Albert St station in Brisbane’s CBD.

“From the outset the Cross River Rail Delivery Authority has been a debacle,” he said.

“It has failed to deliver oversight of tenders and procurement, and turned a blind eye to a litany of egregious safety breaches by CPB which have attracted more than 150 enforcement notices from safety regulators.”

Mr Bailey disputed the union’s claims, declaring the project remained on time and on budget, with the tunnel boring machines working ahead of schedule.

“Having two tunnels running all the way from Roma Street to Woolloongabba is a key milestone for this transformational project,” he said.

“It means we are tracking incredibly well to break through at the Normanby portal later this year as planned.”
