Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner has confirmed he will run for re-election in next year’s council election, with the LNP leader at City Hall insisting he is only “just warming up”.

In an interview with The Sunday Mail, Mr Schrinner even left the door open to leading his party at Brisbane City Council all the way through to the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Mr Schrinner ascended to the lord mayoralty in 2019 when Graham Quirk stepped away from the job – and was elected to his own four year term with a victory over Labor’s Patrick Condren at the 2020 poll.

“When I first became the Lord Mayor in 2019, I was one of the youngest lord mayors ever,” Mr Schrinner said.

“Even now after almost four years I’m only 45. I’m just warming up.

“I feel like there’s so many things to be done across Brisbane over the coming years. Definitely I will be putting my hand up again (for re-election).”

The LNP has held the Brisbane lord mayoralty since 2004, and has controlled the council chamber since 2008 – where it currently holds 19 of the 26 wards.

Mr Schrinner indicated he would be pointing to his team’s experience in his pitch to voters ahead of the March, 2024 election.

“In the lead up to last election in 2020, our clear pitch or message to the people of Brisbane and the question that we asked was ‘who do you trust to run Australia’s largest council?’,” he said.

“That experienced team that we’ve got is I think really critical going forward – and even more so when you’ve got so much delivery to be done in the lead up to the Olympics.”

The Sunday Mail revealed in November there was a push underway within some Labor circles for former state government Minister Kate Jones to run as the party’s lord mayoral candidate in 2024.

Asked about the potential match up, Mr Schrinner said the selection of Labor’s lord mayoral candidate was a matter for their party.

“Who Labor chooses doesn’t change the job that we’ve got to do over the coming years,” he said.

And when asked if he would still like to be lord mayor during the 2032 Games, Mr Schrinner said: “While I continue to wake up every day and be excited about the job that we’re doing and have that fire in the belly, I will continue to put my hand up to serve the people of Brisbane.”

“The minute I wake up and I lose that fire in the belly, that’s the day when I will let the people of Brisbane know that maybe it’s time to do something else,” he said.

“But that fire is burning strongly. I don’t see that fire dying out anytime soon.”
