VIPs invited to Premier’s $700-a-minute Christmas party

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has billed taxpayers for a $700-a-minute invitation-only Christmas party. SEE WHO WAS THERE

Palaszczuk should spend ‘less time at gala balls’ and more time ‘being accountable’

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk billed taxpayers more than $64,000 for a $700-a-minute invite-only Christmas party to which she invited Hollywood director Baz Luhrmann.

The startling cost – and the full guest list – of last year’s Premier’s Cabinet Christmas function at Queensland Ballet’s new $100 million headquarters in Brisbane’s West End has been revealed through Right to Information laws.

Ms Palaszczuk’s office yesterday defended the hosting of the function, saying the event was a “longstanding tradition” which dated back multiple governments.

But the Opposition questioned the cost, and the Palaszczuk government’s priorities.

Ms Palaszczuk was famously snapped on the red carpet with Luhrmann and the stars of Elvis – including Tom Hanks and Austin Butler – at the film’s Gold Coast premiere in June last year.

Alongside Luhrmann and his Oscar-winning partner Catherine Martin – who The Courier-Mail understands did not attend the event – were several other Hollywood heavy-hitters on the invite list.

SEE THE FULL LIST BELOW

They included Godzilla vs. Kong and Pirates of the Caribbean producer Eric McLeod, executive producer of Netflix series Boy Swallows Universe Andrew Mason, and Disney’s Chris Loveall – the executive producer of UK series Nautilus.

Also scoring invitations from Ms Palaszczuk were a host of rich-listers, athletes, business identities, and union powerbrokers – as well as current and former Labor politicians, department bosses, and stakeholders.

Mining billionaire Gina Rinehart landed an invite, as did fellow richlister and tech entrepreneur Bevan Slattery, AEG Ogden’s Harvey Lister, Suncorp boss Steve Johnston, hospitality king Johnny Gambaro, and Racing Queensland’s Steve Wilson.

Olympic champion Dawn Fraser, former NRL player Johnathan Thurston, swimmers Ariarne Titmus, Zac Stubblety-Cook and Shayna Jack, and Paralympian Kurt Fearnley were all invited.

Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games president Andrew Liveris also made the invite list, as did members of the Games organising committee.

Guests were advised to arrive at 5.15pm for a 5.30pm to 7pm event, with the VIPs asked to wear only “flat shoes or block heels”, to protect the centre’s flooring.

Under Right to Information laws, The Courier-Mail can reveal the event cost taxpayers $64,238 – or more than $700 per minute for the 90-minute function.

The event was held in early December last year, and took place at the Thomas Dixon Centre – Queensland Ballet’s flash new $100m headquarters in West End.

A spokesman for Ms Palaszczuk said a key component of the annual event was presenting donations to charity, and it was an “important opportunity” for them to be recognised and supported.

Along with speeches from Ms Palaszczuk and Deputy Premier Steven Miles, guests were also treated to a “sneak peek” performance of The Nutcracker by Queensland Ballet dancers.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner and Governor Jeannette Young were in attendance, as was Ms Palaszczuk’s partner, surgeon Dr Reza Adib.

United Workers Union boss Gary Bullock, Australian Workers’ Union National President Marina Chambers, Queensland Council of Unions General Secretary Michael Clifford, and Police Union boss Ian Leavers also landed on the invite list.

Leading arts identity Phillip Bacon, Brisbane Festival chief executive Charlie Cush and Queensland Ballet’s Li Cunxin and Mary Li were also invited.

Former Labor Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s name appeared on the invitation list, as was federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers, Sports Minister Anika Wells, Labor state secretary Kate Flanders along with Ms Palaszczuk’s cabinet colleagues.

Youth Justice Minister Leanne Linard posted several pictures from the event, writing “wonderful evening at the Premier’s Cabinet Christmas reception held at the Thomas Dixon Centre, the stunning new home of the Queensland ballet.

“It was a great opportunity to thank our key stakeholders from across the state who make such a meaningful contribution to Queensland lives,” the Minister wrote on social media.

Ms Palaszczuk’s office did not answer several questions put by The Courier-Mail on Sunday, including how many people on the invitation list attended the event, and how the location for the function was determined.

In 2021, Ms Palaszczuk’s Cabinet Christmas reception was even pricier. That year’s event was held at the Queensland Art Gallery, at a cost of $77,762.

In light of the revelations, LNP Deputy Leader Jarrod Bleijie accused the government of being “obsessed with glitz of glamour”.

“They’ve forgotten about the struggles of everyday working Queenslanders,” he said.

“As each day goes by Queenslanders are questioning the priorities of Premier Palaszczuk and her Labor Government.”
