Proserpine sugar mill damaged by overnight fire

A crime scene has been established after a fire at a north Queensland sugar mill overnight, with early investigations suggesting the fire was deliberately lit.

The mill has sustained significant damage, with police and other authorities investigating the cause.

POLICE investigating a fire at a Proserpine sugar mill overnight suspect the blaze was deliberately lit.

The Wilmar mill sustained significant danger in the blaze, which started about 3am.

The fire was “well-involved” when crews arrived and took about 90 minutes to put out.

No-one was injured.

Police say early investigations suggest two people were at the mill about midnight, entering an office block and starting a fire.

That building sustained significant damage, but the fire did not spread.
