Prison guard’s fingers crushed after an incident with an inmate
A prison guard at a Townsville Correctional Centre has required stitches after an altercation with an inmate.

An officer has been hospitalised after an altercation with an inmate left him with injuries to his fingers and face in Townsville.
The incident took place at Townsville Correctional Centre when the officer went into a cell to ‘engage’ with an agitated prisoner, Queensland Correctional Services said.

The officer went to leave the cell as the prisoner lashed out at him but while he tried to leave his fingers became caught in the cell door.
As well as the injuries to his fingers the officer had some facial bruising from the interaction.
The officer was taken to Townsville Hospital for treatment where his fingers required stitches.
In a statement, Queensland Corrective Services said: “Management and senior officers are continuing to support the officer.”
“Officer safety is Queensland Corrective Services’ absolute priority. Every officer deserves to go home safely at the end of shift,” the statement read.
