PREMIER Annastacia Palaszczuk has thrown her support behind a proposal for a major entertainment arena for Brisbane.
She said the $400 million proposal by AEG Ogden, part of the global giant Anschutz group, showed that business confidence in the southeast was at a high.
“It’s showing that the business community has the appetite to invest in Queensland through our market-led proposals,” she said.
Ms Palaszczuk conceded that there was a significant approval process that needed to be passed in order for the development to go through, but said she had an “open mind” when it came to where the centre could be located.
The proposal comes after the dated Boondall entertainment centre, which is an irritant for many Brisbane residents because of its location, celebrated its 30th anniversary.
AEG chairman and chief executive Harvey Lister said that it was only a matter of time until Brisbane matched other capital cities around the country with a truly world class venue.
The Sunday Mail yesterday revealed plans for the 15,000-capacity multipurpose stadium that could host music acts through to monster trucks and be within walking distance of the $3 billion Queens Wharf development and Star Casino.
The Premier was speaking yesterday from Dreamworld, where she announced a $7 million redevelopment of Tiger Island.
She was accompanied by CEO Craig Davidson and designer Jamie Durie. The revamp is expected to be finished this year.
