A MAN who was found dead near the Logan Reserve boat ramp on Friday had a number of gunshot wounds.

Members of the public located the body of Julian Neuendorf, 38, in the Logan River near the Logan Reserve boat ramp at Henderson Park about 9.15am on Friday.

The murder victim had been known to police for a number of years and had "a few questionable associates", Detective Superintendent David Hutchinson said.

Det Supt Hutchinson said Mr Neuendorf probably was fatally shot on Thursday, between 7pm and 9pm.

He said witnesses heard gunshots on Thursday night, but he also appealed to anyone who might have been setting off fireworks in the area to come forward.

Divers were on Saturday scouring the Logan River near the boat ramp for clues.

"Police would like to speak with anyone who has knowledge of this incident, who saw anything suspicious in the Logan Reserve area on Thursday evening or who may have knowledge of Mr Neuendorf's movements over the last few days,'' a police statement said.

"Officers are also appealing for public information regarding the movements of Mr Neuendorf's black 2007 Ford Falcon GT sedan."

Black tyre marks could be seen at the boat ramp.

Det Supt Hutchinson said a post mortem would be conducted to determine how long he had been in the water.

"There was quite an amount of mud on the body," he said.

He said police divers and volunteers from the State Emergency Services would be used to scour the area to search for evidence.

Mr Neuendorf was found in a relatively isolated location at the end of a dead-end road.

A nearby resident said they heard tyres screeching during the night but thought nothing of it as the area is frequented by hoons.

"It's a very eerie place," she said.

"I heard squealing tyres during the night but we always hear that.

"There have been a lot of cars set on fire down there and once there was a pig's head put in the tree.

"The council needs to put a camera there."

The woman said she has seen police at the boat ramp on many occasions, conducting searches and examining burnt out cars.

Det Supt Hutchinson said police were trying to find out why Mr Neuendorf, who was last seen in Mitchelton earlier on Thursday, was in the Logan area that night.

He said Mr Neuendorf had a "varied criminal history" but no known links to outlaw motorcycle gangs.

There were no known suspects at this stage.

Mr Neuendorf had a partner with a daughter.
