POLICE are investigating the theft of two newborn puppies that were snatched from their mother in the middle of the night.

Lewis Davis, 26, of Mitchleton said someone broke into his home in the early hours of Monday morning and stole more than $4000 worth of electronic equipment, passports and other forms of identification as well as two of five Maltese Shih tzu cross puppies.

Mr Davis said the puppies turned one month old today so were still too young to be weaned from their mother.

“The dogs weren’t even walking yet, they’re eyes had only just opened,” he said.

“They took a white boy and a white girl. One has black spots and the other has brown patches.”

The sales consultant said he, his fiance Sophie Kennedy and their two young children were asleep when one of their dogs started barking between 2am and 3am Monday.

“I noticed the back door and the front gate was wide open and all the drawers in the kitchen had been pulled open,” he said.

“They took my bag, which had my ID and cards in it and my partner’s laptop bag which had her passport in it, as well as some consoles and iPads and stuff like that.

“They have broken down the back fence and we found a can of dog food that was not from our house there as well.”

Mr Davis said they also found dog treats that did not belong to them near the damaged fence.

Sophie Kennedy, 28, said she felt sick to her stomach knowing people were in their house as they, their 2-year-old daughter and six month old son slept.

She wrote in a Facebook post their main concern, out of the stolen items, was the puppies.

“Several items have been taken the main concern is they have taken “two small white and black spotty Maltese Shih tzu puppies out of a litter of 5. These puppies are only three weeks old they need their Mum!!! (sic) she wrote in a Facebook post.

“Please if this person is reading this please for the love of god bring the dogs back they need their Mum!”

Mr Davis said the mother of the puppies, 6-year-old Moet, appeared distressed on Monday.

“Moet is very distressed and didn’t want to go near the rest of the puppies all day. We had to coax her,” he said.

“She was lying near the front door a lot Monday. The boy dog as well was hiding away.

“As time goes on we’re more concerned that the puppies are not going to be found in good shape.

“Unless you know what you’re doing and have the patience and time to care for them. They need their mum still.”

The stolen puppies are the latest in a number of dogs owners believe to have been stolen in southeast Queensland.

Anna Gerbanas, 24, this week paid $1200 for a billboard in Waterford West to help try to find her french bulldog, Frankie, who she said was stolen from her Logan Reserve home on February 2.
In support of the campaign outdoor advertising company Bishopp also donated to the cause, broadcasting Frank’s face on the company’s digital portrait in Ann St at Fortitude Valley and at Ipswich.

Miss Gebranas said she believed someone has taken Frank because they saw the opportunity to make a “quick buck” by breeding the sought-after breed.

French bulldogs are highly in demand and can fetch up to $15,000, with an average price of $4000.

Kirilly Cull, founder of the Missing and Stolen Pets in QLD Facebook group, told the Courier Mail pet theft is on the rise, with her own records indicating there was an average of two dogs reported stolen in Queensland every week in the past year.

She said dogs were stolen for reasons including bait, financial motivation or emotionally driven theft during relationship breakups.

Anyone with information on the dog thefts are asked to call police.
