A woman in her 60s, a man in his 30s and two dogs were thrown out of a 5.3m boat when it suddenly overturned off Stradbroke Island about midday today.

The incident happened off Amity Point at the northern tip of the island.

It is believed the two were pulled from the water to another passing boat. Only one of the dogs could be saved.

Their boat subsequently sank.

The woman remains in Princess Alexandra Hospital in a serious condition after being airlifted by emergency services. The man did not require hospitalisation.

A doctor and a paramedic were lowered from an emergency helicopter on to the rescue boat, where the patients were assessed.
