An unlikely visitor has been spotted flashing its feathers around several inner-Brisbane suburbs with surprised residents asking where the bird came from.
Newmarket and Alderley residents have reported seeing a peacock making itself comfortable in their backyards over recent days.
Newmarket resident Mary Wong said she was working at home when she spotted the bird in her yard.
“I saw it from the corner of my eye and it was on my back fence walking around, it went up in the garden and it sat there for ages,” she said.
“My son slowly walked out and it literally let him get six inches away from it – he let it get right beside him.”
She said the encounter led her to believe the bird was not from the wild and could be someone’s pet.
“I’ve seen peacocks many times before, but when I saw it I was surprised.”
“So many people were saying it had visited them the other day so it must frequent the area.”
According to Brisbane City Council, there were now significant wild populations of peacocks and peahens around some Brisbane suburbs.
Residents keeping or feeding roaming peafowl were considered their keeper and was required to comply with the requirements of the Animals Local Law.
