Fatal flight: Singapore passenger recalls turbulence

Repatriated passengers from the turbulence-stricken Singapore Airlines flight that killed one man and left dozens injured landed in Brisbane on Wednesday night.

A British passenger died and more than 30 people were taken to hospital, seven with critical injuries, after Singapore Airlines Flight SQ321 experienced severe turbulence and plunged 6000ft, sending passengers crashing into the ceiling.

The passengers bound for Brisbane are travelling on Singapore Airlines flight SQ245 after departing Singapore Changi Airport at 10:37am on Tuesday.

More than 20 Australian Red Cross staff were waiting at Brisbane International arrivals to assist injured and shaken passengers as they reunited with distressed loved ones.

State Manager Emergency Services Collin Sivalingum said Red Cross volunteers would also make sure psychosocial support was available for traumatised passengers and family members.

“This has been quite a traumatic event for people we know people did not even want to get onto the flights,” he said.

“After an experience like this it’s very normal to not want to get on a plane.”

Mr Sivalingum said they were particularly concerned with children and young people who had seen images from inside the flight.

Once the flight landed volunteers would meet the passengers on the tarmac, some of whom are expected to be injured, and be inside the reunification area with family.

“Our job is to escort them, walk alongside them and reunite them to family members and along the way we will have conversations and calming them,” he said.

“Making sure they have necessary support and giving them information and resources should they actually feel stressed about it at a later stage.”

Earlier in the day it was confirmed that eight of the 56 Australians on-board the Singapore Airlines flight had been injured and were being treated in a hospital in Bangkok.

In a statement, DFAT said consular officials from the Australian embassy in Bangkok are providing consular assistance to the eight Australians.

The Boeing 777-300ER flight from London Heathrow to Singapore was forced to divert to Bangkok and make an emergency landing at 3.45pm local time on Tuesday (6.45pm AEST) when it struck what the airline described as “sudden extreme turbulence” over Myanmar, 11 hours into its journey. Singapore Airlines CEO Goh Choon Phong said the airline apologised for the trauma experienced.
