Why this is the deadliest year for shark attacks since 2012

A man flown to hospital in a critical condition after he was attacked by a shark on the Great Barrier Reef on Sunday requires emergency surgery.

A police spokesman said the man, a 59-year-old from South Mission Beach, needed emergency surgery for the wound to his upper leg.

He said the man was spearfishing when he was attacked by the shark about 12.20pm at Britomart Reef at Lucinda, 120km north of Townsville and part of the central Great Barrier Reef.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman earlier said the rescue helicopter and paramedics met the man at the Dungeness boat ramp where he was worked on before being flown in a critical condition.

Britomart Reef is a popular spearfishing destination and was the location of the 2018 Queensland Spearfishing Titles.
