Overcast skies and rain return to Brisbane this weekend

The weather bureau has issued a warning that the weekend’s expected cold weather could be life-threatening for livestock in parts of southern Queensland, as temperatures drop as low as 5C, while rainy conditions are on the way for Brisbane.

Further flood events likely to continue until 'at least' the end of 2022

Grey skies will shroud Brisbane this weekend as rain returns to the south east, while there are fears the cold snap could prove deadly for some livestock in the Darling Downs and Granite Belt.

Brisbane was heading for a maximum temperature of 22C on Friday, increasing from a chilly start at just 10.9C at the airport, although a wind chill made that feel more like 7C.

Showers were expected later in the day.

The coldest temperatures overnight were once again recorded in the Darling Downs and Scenic Rim areas, with Warwick reaching 5.8C, Kingaroy 5.4C and Canungra 6.8C.

The Bureau has issued a warning that sheep are at risk of dying across southern Queensland this weekend as lambs and sheep will be exposed to the chilly conditions on Saturday.

“Sheep graziers are warned that cool temperatures and moderate winds are expected during Saturday, following rainfall today and early Saturday morning,” a warning stated.

“Areas likely to be affected include parts of the Darling Downs and Granite Belt forecast district.”

The bureau is expected to update the warning by 5pm.

A Bureau of Meteorology spokeswoman said that Brisbane’s showers would be most likely to develop on Friday night and into Saturday morning.

“We will see them most likely tonight and then that trough will move off shore, so those showers will weaken throughout the night and into the morning.”

Falls are not expected to be substantial, with forecasters expecting between 3-6mm on Friday and between 2-6mm on Saturday.

Cloud cover associated with the showers is expected to lock moisture in over the Brisbane region, keeping temperatures relatively mild over the weekend, before decreasing throughout the working week when maximums will be below 20C.

Saturday will be the warmest day of the next week, with a maximum of 23C and a minimum of 16C before maximums fall to 21C on Sunday and Monday and 19C on Tuesday.

Colder temperatures in the single digits will return next week with 9C expected on Wednesday and 7C on Thursday.

Winds are also expected to stick around for the next week after sweeping the south east on Sunday, with westerly gusts of between 15 and 20 knots predicted on Monday through to Wednesday, before weakening on Thursday.
