The opening date for Brisbane’s newest pedestrian bridge has been revealed.

The $299m Kangaroo Point Green Bridge is set to open on December 15 with a public event.

“People will be able to use the bridge on the 15th of December,” Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said this week.

“I’m really excited about this one, because there’s a lot of anticipation.”

Mr Schrinner said the goal was to work towards the above-water restaurant and bar on the bridge to open on the same date.

“Well, that’s what we’d like to see, but we’re working on that at the moment,” he said.

“There’s still feverish work going on just to finish off a few things.”

Mr Schrinner revealed the opening date for the bridge ahead of the burial of a time capsule which contains material related to the construction of the 470m bridge.

“So there’s a lot of information and things related to the construction of the bridge that will be opened up in 50 years time, so 2074,” he said.

“It’s interesting though to picture what Brisbane will be like in 50 years time.

“Can you imagine the city it will be and the change that’s happened over the last 50 years.

“So it’s our little message to the future.”

Constructed by BESIX Watpac, the Kangaroo Point Green Bridge is expected to take nearly 85,000 cars off the road every year.

With the bridge spanning 95 metres in height, the top of the Kangaroo Point Bridge will be 20 metres taller than the Story Bridge.

Kangaroo Point Green Bridge will help reduce travel times by up to 50 per cent, cutting the commute between Brisbane’s eastern suburbs and the CBD by up to 15 minutes, or up to 30 minutes for pedestrians travelling from Kangaroo Point and the Gabba Stadium to the CBD.
