Oldest person in Queensland, Mabel Crosby, 109, tells her secret to long life

Queensland’s oldest person was alive when the Titanic sank and during the terms of 27 of Australia’s 30 prime ministers. She was one of 44 centenarians who are still going strong and who gathered at State Parliament today for a special lunch with the Premier.

THE oldest person in Queensland says the secret to living a long life is simply keeping active.

Mabel Crosby, 109, was among 44 centenarians from across the state who gathered at State Parliament today for a special lunch with the Premier.

The gathering was just shy of the record set at State Parliament in 2016 when there were 45 people aged over 100 in the one room.

Ms Crosby has lived in Australia since she moved from England at the age of four, originally settling in Newcastle before moving to Queensland in the 1970s.

She says she has kept active throughout her life, joking that she can still put her family “in their place”.

“There’s so many games to play as well as work and walking,” she said.

“I played tennis.

“I walked miles to school every day through the bush.”

Ms Crosby is a mother of four, grandmother to ten, a great grandmother to 16 and a great-great grandmother to six children.

Her youngest daughter Robyne Bamberry, 77, said they had always been a close family.

“She taught all of us to respect our elders and respect other people’s belongings,” she said.

“She just enjoys being with family. And always being active — she played lawn bowls right up until she was in her nineties.”

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk joined the centenarians for their lunch and said she loved Ms Crosby’s outlook on life.

“At her party held at the TriCare Sunnybank Hills Aged Care Residence she wore a crown and remarked that she felt like the Queen of Queensland,” she said.

“Her advice to others for a long and happy life are always be active, enjoy a wine or two and have adventures and travel.”

There are currently 94 centenarians across Queensland.
