Two men have been charged with murder over the death of NRL star Tom Opacic’s brother in a bizarre prison love triangle tragedy.
Jake Opacic, 28, died in a motorcycle crash near Numinbah Correctional Centre in the Gold Coast hinterland on Friday after a verbal stoush with two men outside the prison farm.
He had gone to the jail for the release of his ex-girlfriend but police will allege he came face-to-face with her new partner.
A Narangba man, 29, surrendered to Laidley police early on Saturday morning and was initially charged with dangerous driving, leaving the scene of an accident and driving while disqualified.
Police said the man, along with a 28-year-old Mitchelton man who was arrested on the Sunshine Coast on Saturday, had now been charged with murder.
Both are due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on Monday.
Earlier on Sunday, NRL star Tom Opacic slammed a ‘very low’ fake fundraising page set up following the death of his brother.
Tom Opacic, a former Brisbane Bronco and North Queensland Cowboy who now plays for the Parramatta Eels, took to Instagram on Sunday to warn of a fake online fundraiser on the GoGetFunding platform.
The ‘fundraiser’ is titled ‘Team Opacic’ with a photo of Tom in his Parramatta Eels jersey, and claims to be seeking $5000 for the ‘Jack Opacic Burial Fund’.
“If someone sees this post shared or anywhere please report, FAKE,” Opacic posted on his Instagram story.
“Some very low people out there.”
