An elderly interstate driver told police the reason why he drunkenly drove off the Noosa Spit while on holidays is because he was following his GPS.

Ian Malcolm Graham, 77, had been holidaying in Noosa when he crashed his car along Claude Batten Dr about 7pm time on July 17, 2022, a court has heard.

Police prosecutor Allison Johnstone told Noosa Magistrates Court officers came to the crash where the Victorian man had driven onto the rock wall and became stuck at the Noosa Spit.

Witnesses said they saw the car drive through several car parks, onto the sidewalk and tried to get onto the beach.

Graham told police he was following his GPS and didn’t realise the road ended.

Sergeant Johnstone told the court Graham returned a blood-alcohol content of 0.131.

The court heard the 77-year-old Victorian man, who appeared by phone in court on August 2, 2022, had mixed his medication with alcohol and made the decision to drive on a dark night.

Graham pleaded guilty to drink driving, was fined $550 and disqualified from driving for five months.

A conviction was recorded.
