A bus driver has been brutally assaulted in a brazen daylight attack at a Sunshine Coast bus station.

A bus driver has been brutally assaulted in a brazen daylight attack at a Sunshine Coast bus station.

The 57-year-old driver was in the lunch room at the Noosa Bus Interchange on Saturday when he was set upon by a member of the public.

The attacker assaulted the driver with several punches to the head and body after being asked to leave the room just after 1.30pm.

Transport Workers' Union Queensland branch secretary Peter Biagini is calling for the implementation of the Queensland Sentencing Advisory Council's recommendation that an assault on a bus driver should be considered an aggravating factor during sentencing.

In a statement, the Transport Workers' Union said the brazen attack by a member of the public showed drivers deserved greater protections at work.

"Drivers are regularly being assaulted and abused just for doing their job" Mr Biagini said.

"Once again, a member of the public has attacked a driver and caused them injury and distress."

Mr Biagini labelled the assault a "low act".

"The sentencing needs to take into account the work that bus drivers do for our community," he said.

It's understood the driver is doing OK and will now be taking some time off work to recover.

A Queensland Police Service spokesperson confirmed a police report had been submitted however no arrests have been made at this stage.

It's understood the alleged attacker was described as a teenage male wearing black shorts.
