The glitz and glamour of one of Hastings St’s social fundraisers of the year is helping a support service deal with a 40 per cent increase in families fleeing domestic violence on the Coast.
Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart has joined television personality and anti-domestic violence campaigner Kay McGrath at SunnyKids Cooroy Family Support Centre to promote ongoing fundraising efforts for the sold-out Mingle with the Mayor Ball on July 31.
Noosa Council draws line in the sand by backing state-decreed development refusal
Ms McGrath will be MC for the charity fundraising night on July 31 at Sofitel Noosa Resort.
“Domestic and family violence is a huge problem Australia-wide and unfortunately the Sunshine Coast is not immune,” Ms Stewart said.
“Police advised me recently that they’ve seen an increase of over 40 per cent in domestic violence issues in the past 12–18 months in our region alone.”
Ms Stewart praised the work being done by the charity ball organising committee led by local businesswoman Josanne Falla.
Ms Falla said Noosa business people deserved a gold star for their donations for raffles and auctions.
SunnyKids general manager Kathleen Hope said there has been an increase in people seeking support since the Covid-19 pandemic began.
“Any funds we receive from the ball will be put towards increasing our counselling and support services for local families,” Ms Hope said.
