Frank Wilkie has officially been declared as Noosa mayor following a substantial victory at the polls.
The Electoral Commission officially declared the former high school teacher as mayor on Wednesday, March 27, 12 days after Noosa residents had their say at the polls.
Mr Wilkie holds 40 per cent of the votes for the Noosa Shire’s top job, with 5772 votes currently separating him and mayoral candidate Ingrid Jackson, who holds 23 per cent.
The other candidates, Nick Hluszko and John Morrall, each hold 21 and 15.4 per cent of the votes respectively.
Mr Wilkie previously held the position as deputy mayor in the Noosa Council.
Mr Wilkie previously told this publication during his campaign more social housing and facilitating more secondary dwellings were among the issues he hoped to tackle if elected.
“We believe we can help solve the rental crisis and the housing crisis through more secondary dwellings,” Mr Wilkie said.
“We’re also partnering with the state and community housing providers to provide social and community housing in both Tewantin and Cooroy for Noosa residents on low to moderate incomes.”
Mr Wilkie also said more resources would be provided to those upholding short-term accommodation laws, as well as necessary reviews.
“We need to resource properly the short term accommodation local law team so they can do the work better and we will review the local law to make sure it’s working as intended,” Mr Wilkie said.
