An historic Brisbane home, built in 1919, has gone up in flames on Brisbane’s northside.
Nine fire crews and an ambulance were called to the massive blaze on Breakfast Creek Rd at Newstead about 11.30am on Sunday.
The fire forced the evacuation of a petrol station next door.
QFES senior support vehicles were all on scene and an investigation team was also alerted. No one was treated for injuries.
Road closures were put in place, including on Breakfast Creek Rd, with motorists told to avoid the area.
The fire was completely extinguished by 12.30pm.
Police tape stretched from Austin Rd across Breakfast Creek to stop people from crossing the road after a large crowd of up to 50 people gathered at the scene.
Jacki Drinnen, who lives on nearby Evelyn St, said she originally thought the petrol station next to the house had gone up in flames.
“The flames were up around the roof,” she said.
“The black smoke was crazy.”
Ms Drinnen said that the building was Heritage listed.
“I’ve lived in the area for years, and I know that home is the last remaining property on Breakfast Creek Rd,” she said.
“It’s Heritage listed, built in 1919, and it was an old police station until 1995 and privately owned since 2006.”
She said that she’s never seen anyone in the house, but the windows were full of old clothes on racks.
“I don’t know if that meant someone had stuff stored there or what,” she said.
“The flames were so forceful I felt the heat from across the street.
“It’s a busy area, I just saw so many people who were out for a bike ride or a walk just stop and gather because the smoke was so huge.”
Another resident, who didn’t want to be named, said he was walking past as the flames went up and that firefighters had working “tirelessly” for quite some time.
“They’ve been at it for a while now.”
“To my knowledge there was no one inside, I haven’t seen anything.”
Another nearby resident, who didn’t want to be named, said they came running from their nearby apartment because the flames were so large.
“The flames smashed through all their windows,” the resident said.
Paramedics on scene said that they were currently on standby but haven’t treated anyone.
