THE Gympie headless torso mystery has deepened after tests revealed a skull found nearby is not from the body.

Police are now looking at two investigations to identify the charred torso found in September and the skull located in a pine plantation last month.

The discoveries were within about 45km of each other on Cooloola Rd, Tin Can Bay and Cedar Pocket Rd, Cedar Pocket, outside Gympie.

MYSTERY: Decapitated, dismembered, dumped and set on fire

UNSOLVED: Police release animation of scars, vaccination marks on body

Detective Inspector Bruce McNab hosed down speculation of two decapitations.

“There were other human bones found in the area of the skull and it’s possible the bones could have been intact (at the time of death) but taken apart by animals,” he said.

Detectives are also searching the prescription records of 1100 Queensland pharmacies that may have sold medication to the unidentified decapitation victim.

The torso – believed to be that of a male aged 40 to 80 – had taken the over-the-counter drug quinine and also the prescription medication Irbesartan. The names of 3000 quinine customers have been sourced from chemists and will be matched against the names of those prescribed Irbesartan – a hypertensive medication.

Detective Inspector McNab said the Irbesartan scripts were yet to be fully compiled.

“We’re also still going through missing persons reports as they are updated and any information we receive from the public,” he said.

Detectives had hoped for a breakthrough after forestry workers came across the skull and some other bones in the Toolara Forest on April 11.

Det Insp McNab had suspected the skull – which had teeth – may have been linked to the torso and sent it away for DNA and other testing.

He said a reconstruction of the skull’s facial features would be considered as the investigation into both cases continued.

Police have previously said they would like to speak to a woman of small to medium build and height, aged 30 to 50, with blonde to brown shoulder-length hair, about the case.
