A “loud bang” was heard between Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay Monday morning, with hundreds of Queenslanders speculating on what could have caused the event.
While Geoscience Australia confirmed no seismic event was observed, some Queenslanders suggested the sound was an earthquake, with a magnitude of 3.8, originating from Narangba.
The last recorded earthquake in the region was a 2.9 magnitude seismic event in May 2022.
“Felt it in Strathpine! Thought someone was in my house running up the hallway,” Mikaylaa Paigee said.
“Yes at Beachmere! I felt the vibrations and knocking through my walls! Thought I was going crazy,” Amelia Miles said.
“I was outside then all of a sudden, my glass doors and garage door was shaking. I thought it may have been the wind but the breeze definitely wasn’t strong enough to do that. I’m in Brighton,” Amz Anderson said.
In response to the reports, Geoscience Australia tweeted a reply earlier on Monday.
“Geoscience Australia received multiple felt reports from the Sunshine Coast and Gympie area at around 10:45am, however no seismic event was observed.”
