Jase Grant was sitting behind the driver of a sedan when it collided with a ute travelling in the opposite direction on Tamborine-Oxenford Rd at Oxenford about 3.30pm yesterday.

The 15-year-old died at the scene. The 17-year-old driver remains in a critical condition at the Gold Coast University Hospital.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said another 17-year-old passenger and an eight-year-old were also travelling in the sedan but escaped with minor injuries.

A woman and two kids, who were travelling in the second vehicle, were uninjured but taken to hospital as a precaution.

Jase’s mother Erryn Grant told The Courier-Mail: “My baby boy was the most talented musician,” she said.

He had played at events in his home town of Ulladulla, a coastal town south of Sydney, including the fundraising event Relay for Life, she said.

It’s understood the teenager had recently moved to the Gold Coast. As the news trickled down across the border, friends began posting tributes.

Matthew Keevers, from Ulladulla, said he knew Jase for about three to four years.

“You were a smart, kind little guy and had an amazing talent in music,” he wrote.

“We had our ups and downs but we always got over them and came back stronger.

“This doesn’t feel real, I’ll forever remember the memories we had.

“I love you my brother.”

Students from Pimpama State Secondary College have started posting tributes to Jasey, affectionately known as Jase online.

“rest in peace jase I hope your doing well up above you’ll be forever missed,” read one.

“15 years of age and 15 forever always in our hearts, making us laugh and smile at your silly jokes,” a friend posted.

“He was a happy boy who was very funny and always made them laugh,” a friend who travelled to school with the boy said.

Pimpama College Principal John Thornberry said the school is providing assistance and counselling for students and staff.

“All students were brought together and told this morning,” Mr Thornberry said.

“Obviously it has devastated their class mates, and teachers.

“We have support in place, and a few extra counsellors brought in,” he said.

Mr Thornberry says the news came as a shock to the community, who first heard of the tragedy on Sunday evening.

“It’s not the news anyone wants to hear, a few of the kids were aware of the accident over the weekend.

Mr Thornberry spoke fondly of the student in Years 10 to 12 who were involved in the incident.

“They are all good kids” he said.

Police are still appealing for any witnesses to the crash, anyone who may have seen the car prior to the crash or anyone who has any dashcam or video that could assist the investigation to please contact Forensic Crash Unit (07) 55 147 880.
