Earlier, on Tuesday there were significant delays for motorists heading south on the M1, with thick traffic on the Pacific Motorway between Beenleigh and Surfers Paradise.

Roughly an hour was added to southbound commutes about 5.15pm, with the heaviest of the traffic impacting motorists around Beenleigh, Ormeau, and the Coomera Bridge at Helensvale.

Other arterials were also caught up in the traffic chaos: there were about 20 minute delays for motorists heading west along the Warrego Highway between Riverview and North Tivoli, while closer to the city, the Riverside Expressway was heavily congested in both directions.

Traffic there banked back to the Regatta Hotel at Toowong and Greenslopes on the Pacific Motorway, Annerley on Ipswich Road, and Dutton Park on Annerley Road.

Many motorists appeared to have taken the alternative route of Gladstone Road through West End and Highgate Hill, but also ran into delays of about 15-20 minutes there.

On the northern side of the river, though, traffic was relatively free flowing.

There were some delays at the usual trouble spots including Gympie Road through Chermside and Aspley and the Gateway Motorway through Deagon, but motorists were mostly only impacted by about 10 minutes of congestion.
