Motorists are being urged to fill up this week or risk being belted at the bowser ahead of Christmas

Motorists encouraged to use a petrol price monitoring app in efforts to save money at the bower before a Christmas spike.

Motorists are being urged to fill up this week or risk being belted at the bowser ahead of Christmas with prices expected to jump from next weekend.

RACQ’s advice joins news the State Government will continue its real-time fuel price reporting following a two-year trial of the program.

Motorists have a choice of several petrol monitoring apps, and are using them 600,000 times a month in a bid to save money - equalling 20,000 times per day.

The RACQ’s Rebecca Michael urged drivers to use the apps, shop around and buy cheaper fuel.

“Use it to plan your trip basically if you’re travelling and we would also be saying we are entering a cheap phase now, we’d encourage people to fill up over the next week or so to get them through that Christmas period,” she said.

Dr Michael said transport costs, including petrol, were the third largest burden behind home and food expenses.

Energy Minister Mick de Brenni said it had been a tough year on Queenslanders’ wallets with the continuation of the app being critically important to helping people save money.

Since the trial began in late 2018, it has helped save $9.8 million for consumers, equalling about $147 per person.

“Under the mandatory laws these servos publish their fuel prices within 30 minutes, so drivers can be confident of the best deal by comparing prices through a number of apps,” Mr de Brenni said.

“In time for Christmas break, we’re giving families certainty that wherever in Queensland they are planning to go this summer, they can hit the road knowing the best place to fill up.”

Dr Michael said the only chance Queenslanders had of making the price cycle and local competition work for drivers, was to buy when fuel was at its cheapest and where it was at its cheapest.

She said petrol prices jumped as much as 40 cents per litre in the hike phase of the cycle in southeast Queensland.
